This place has great laid back atmosphere the large windows at front make it bright and cheerful during the day, with the sun out. The soft light make it a nice place to unwind as the day ends when the sun goose down. They have all the basics you need for coffee. Lattes, cafe au lait, cappuccinos and a good slow bar (Coffee made taking time were the Batista brews if you, and depending what you get your friends.), were you can get a French press, a single cup V60 or a big chemex to share with friends. I like to get a single cup v60 when I want to long around and drink coffee. The have a few nice home spins to. I recommend the veloce. Its cream espresso and vanilla in a shot glass for a quick pick me up. My Dad likes the smoke house. The clean contemporary furniture is a nice place to set up your lap top and work, relax or hang out. Anyone looking for a good coffee shop across the river should come here. And they removed the limit on a minimum purchase on debit cards I believe,

A great little coffee shop in this corner of the world-- Downtown New Albany appears to be growing a food culture after many years as a semi-abandoned suburban Louisville town--

Sexy Beast and I were waiting for a table at Toast next door. The wait was expected to be longer than twenty minutes. Being impatient and cranky, I popped in to grab a cup of coffee to keep me busy and distracted from the fact that I wasn't getting what I wanted when I wanted it. Quills didn't really help with that issue. There was one person in front of me when I arrived. She ordered her drink and bought a cookie or something for the kids with her. I ordered a simple Americano. The four people behind me ordered their drinks. Each received their drinks before I did. Each of those drinks was far more complicated than an Americano. Actually, the only thing less complicated than an Americano is water. I left more cranky and impatient than I was when I arrived. The bonus was that the twenty minute wait had been whittled down to five by the time I got back over to Toast with my mediocre Americano. If it's going to take that long, the coffee should be worth the wait. It was not.

I really appreciate the attention to detail here. Everything is well presented, and it is clear that they strive for perfection in their roast. I usually order the same thing: a cortado and a cinnamon bagel with cinnamon cream cheese. The quality is consistent. Today, my cortado was rich and usually nutty. But the ratio of milk to coffee is always the same, which tells me mostly that they know how to properly pull an espresso shot. They really know what they're doing. Let's talk about the people here. They're pretty great. There are a few people who have been here since the beginning and I think that says a lot about the business itself, who's running it, etc. I've never had a problem with fellow patrons here, either. A few other reviewers mentioned a long wait time. I've never experienced that here, although, I do not order anything too, too complicated. This isn't Starbucks though; your drink is personal and as funny as it may sound, it's a work of art. Every time. For that, I'm appreciative and thankful! (Coffee) bottoms up, y'all!

The coffee is good but the atmosphere is really sterile and unfriendly.. I stopped in for a latte on a Saturday afternoon. The barista was friendly and knowledgeable and my drink was excellent. I also noted that they had an impressive selection of international chocolate bars on sale. However, I ended up getting my drink to go because the atmosphere in the coffee shop is so off-putting. The shop is set up with long rows of work tables and chairs. While I was there everyone was staring into their computer screens and you could have heard a pin drop in the room. When I talked to the barista too loudly several people glared at me across the room. It really felt more like a high school study hall than a coffee shop. I guess I just prefer coffee shops with couches, fireplaces, and board games than one that gives me flashbacks of study hall.

I like it better than their Highlands Louisville location, something about it is more social and relaxed. I think it's modern in decor but warmed by the slightly worn blond wood floors and tables. Clean bathroom, great lighting and some very low, mellow underground hip hop playing overhead. Vegan treats, too! Very nice.

I tried the autumn harvest latte which was sweetened with maple syrup and seasoned with cinnamon and nutmeg and I was quite impressed by the balance of sweetness and spice. The service was prompt and friendly, the ambiance is minimalist and trendy.

Love this place. I live in Nashville and I gotta say that this is top o' the line specialty coffee establishment. If you love pour over's this is the place. Great roaster, and great friendly baristas.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I'm going to admit here - I am not a coffee drinker. My review of that aspect Quills is all based on "second hand" information, and I will say I was very much disappointed there while a coffee shop, that there was no 'tea menu' though I've been provided with a rumor that they actually do serve a very NICE tea service. I will have to confirm this on future visit. All that ramble aside - the ambiance of this place is what I won't hesitate to review. This is a very 'welcoming' Cafe. The Tables are long, with outlets at the end and very much encourages writers, students or 'others' to sit down for awhile at the keyboard. The ambiance is quiet, with music that is unobtrusive but very much adds to the whole 'feel' of the place. Bits of education on the walls, including explanations of the different methods of coffee preparations etc. very much drew the eye. The have an assortment of tasty treats - some healthy, others I'd 'question' but definitely a place that encourages one to sit for awhile, chill, and perhaps have more than a cup or two. If the rumors of Tea are true, I can see this becoming a place to spend more than a few hours at.

Now we're talking. More positive, bright, cleaner feel to this location than Baxter. Also, the consistency of my ordered drinks has been on every time. Extractions are aromatic, flavorful, tasty, well done, and the barista culture here seems to care about what they are doing, and for this consistency. As of yet, no over-extraction errors. Too bad there isn't much of a crowd here, but it IS New Albany. These nice, crafted tables are going to waste. As a customer and cafe aficionado, and coffee business community member, I still have to ask, what's for sale here? I definitely can't eat here, and I don't have any interest whatsoever in the plastic-wrapped vegan? pastries (that's an oxymoron to me) . . . plus the lighting is so spotty and theatrical that it just doesn't work to illustrate any of the objects for sale or the menu for that matter. I feel like I need sunglasses to stand at the counter. Just a hint and some free advice. Thanks for the nice building in the funky town location . . . I'm glad someone can afford to jump into this street . . . but, 3 stars because it just isn't a high energy place and you feel like a coffee alien in this low energy street location's business model. Folks, get in the car and drive over and hang out here and check it out. Inquire about the Blacksmith blend and watch them roast. It's a get involved type of space. For us aliens . . .

We stopped here to tank up on coffee for the drive to the Chicago area. Quill's was friendly and coffee drinks well prepared but a bit on the mild side for my taste. I've been drinking too much Starbucks, apparently. Very nice place with friendly staff. They roast their own coffee here.

Quill's Coffee is the absolute best coffee shop in the lower Midwest. Their single origins are fantastic, and their pour overs release notes of coffee I never thought imaginable. I've been buying beans every 2 weeks from here, and they're almost always within 3 days of having been roasted. The beans are on par with the Stumptowns and Blue Bottles of the coffee world, and that's saying something. El Eden (sadly out of season) and El Porvenir are my personal favorites, and they're must tries as pour overs in the shop. Bryan is normally the main barista in there, and he's quite friendly and of course incredibly knowledgable on the world of coffee. Lastly, Quill's won Gold at the Coffee Fest in Chicago. They're the real deal.

This coffee is great. The staff isn't overly friendly but you get used to it. They seem like coffee snobs at first but the flavors are second to none. They have a very limited snack selection. Mostly bakery items that are high in sugar and not paleo friendly. However they are the only place around that offers almond milk! Yummy!

This is my favorite hang out to get serious homework done. The drinks are AWESOME. I'm really into the cayenne in the Alchemist right now. I wish the price point was a little lower, so I only go there once and a while for a treat. I can always expect a great drink, great service from a knowledgeable staff, and a chill atmosphere until the "soup kitchen vibe" I get from Coffee Crossing.

This is such a nice and quiet place to slow down for a moment and enjoy yourself -- really, a top-notch spot to check out in New Albany. I took a few hours out of my day on Wednesday to work at this Quills Coffee while I was visiting Southern Indiana. The drinks are the same as you would find at other Quills locations -- the red tea latte being one of my favorites! -- and the staff is equally as friendly as those you find elsewhere. They are always ready with a smile and eager to help a customer decide on a drink. I've also found that Quills employees are over-the-top knowledgable about coffee and how best to brew it. I was sad to realize that I had forgotten my headphones at home, but the music selection was similar to what I would have chosen anyway. And I was quickly able to fall into the work groove. At one point, though, it occurred to me that, aside from the music, it was as quiet as a library. Everyone had their heads in either laptops, books or magazines. And I remember thinking that it's going to be jarring if anyone comes in hoping to catch up with a friend. But a group of people did come in, hoping to chat, and happily, it wasn't as disruptive as one would think. They didn't disturb my flow, and I was able to easily tune them out and continue typing away. The front part of Quills has some arm chairs but mostly four-person tables. They're good for groups but also large enough to where you can ask someone if you can share the table and it not feel like someone is invading another person's space. I also like the large, old department store sign near the entrance. It's nice to have a bit of history in a space that has undergone a somewhat modern makeover. I hope to be back, now that I know I have a place to work on my laptop for a couple hours in New Albany.

On a weekend trip to Louisville, my wife and I visited two Quills locations. The New Albany location, nestled on a quite street in downtown New Albany was definitely my favorite. The staff helped us navigate the menu and gave some great recommendations. My wife got the cold brew and I got a cold brew soda that was Derby Pie flavored. It was unlike any coffee drink I've had before and I loved it.

While visiting the New Albany farmers market, I was over the moon to find a Quills just around the block. I stepped in to grab a cold, iced chai latte and enjoy a few minutes of air conditioning before braving the grueling heat out on the street. I'm a fan of Quills. I've visited and raved about the Louisville locations. This is why I was saddened to receive three star service at this location. Granted, it was a bustling Sat during the market, but management should expect crowds at that time. Two baristas, one who didn't seem to see or care about the large line forming behind me, were manning the counter. After standing in front of them for almost 5 min, I finally asked the gent closest to me where or with whom they'd like me to order. After saying that I was in the right place (by the register), he went back to the pour over that was consuming his attention. I could see at least two people in the back, one of whom came out front to ask a question and then retreated. With at least four customers in line behind me, I would have expected any staff in house to jump in and help out. The locations at UofL and in the Highlands stay pretty busy and I've never experienced this kind of wait ever. My barista was polite and quickly made my order once he got to me. I do wonder how long it took those behind me to get their drinks? Think I'll stick to the Quills on this side of the river from now on.

The coffee is solidly 3rd wave and well roasted but the service is consistently very bad. The process of taking orders and making drinks always seems to be disorganized and slow. I'm a local and this is the closest shop to my house and over the years the negative experiences stack up. I've come to buy beans and they've been completely out. I've come for a quick cup of drip coffee and they've been out or made me wait for 20 minutes for my drink while they make the drinks of the 3 people who order after me. About 1 in 3 baristas is not too hipster to smile and be friendly. The others seem like they'd be happier if they were left alone.

Always friendly service with some of the best hot chocolate around. Quills provides a great atmosphere for studying, writing, or just relaxing.

Exceptional coffee! The shop has a clean simple feel. If the sun is shining in the front window just right, grab a seat on the couch and soak up the rays with your tasty beverage in hand. Very relaxing.

Quills' Chai Latte makes me want to live closer to New Albany! That was some of the best Chai I've ever had! It didn't have the zip that I usually like but the perfect flavor and the creamy texture of the froth took away my "lack of zip" disappointment! My husband and I just stopped in to grab a cup to go but I really wish I could have stayed a while. The atmosphere of this coffee shop rivals any that I frequented on the West Coast with a great urban warehouse feel but warm and inviting all at the same time. More than likely you'll find several locals sitting around on their laptops working at the long wooden tables provided just for that reason. I also loved the large blackboard wall with instructionals on the different types of coffee preparation. The customer service was friendly and knowledgeable and their retail coffee products were fairly numerous. I really really love this place and can't wait to return!!

The best coffee shop. The coffee is awesome and so is the atmosphere. I just wish they had longer hours on the weekends. We would love to stop by in the evening s during dates.

I've been in here twice and both times the wait time for coffee has been a bit ridiculous. The coffee isn't bad, but imo it's not worth waiting ten minutes for a soy latte (which seems to be the average wait time for MY orders, despite coming in when there aren't ANY other people in line ahead of me). If I'm not wanting to cross the bridge to Louisville, I'll probably go back. Otherwise, I'll keep getting my coffee at Highland Coffee.

Quills is among the best of the best in coffee shops. It has great atmosphere, terrific coffee and coffee drinks and really wonderful tea. There is an assortment of baked goods. Tables were made by neighboring Thorpe Woodworks and provide nice style and sturdy work spots. I love this place and I know I will be here often.

It was not.

Quills is my favorite coffee shop in the Louisville area. Quills New Albany is my favorite location. You don't have to fight traffic/hunt for parking spaces nearly as bad as you do at Quills Baxter Ave. I also enjoy being able to see the roasting operation. My two favorite drinks = cortado and Espresso Accoppiato.
